Session Themes

Session 1: Climate Modelling

Chair - Professor Lesley Gray, University of Oxford

Climate models are dynamic computer simulations of the interacting energy and mass transfers that occur between the atmosphere, ocean, land surface and ice. These models are used in climate engineering to study the local and global effects of changes in greenhouse gas concentrations and the earth's albedo. This session will examine the results of existing climate models and seek to identify major sources of uncertainty.

Session 2: Engineering systems

Chair - Dr Hugh Hunt, University of Cambridge

This session will examine the infrastructure and technology that would be needed to realize SRM proposals. This includes the design of new technology and the modification of existing technologies to (a) reflect sunlight, by surface albedo modification or space reflectors, and/or (b) deliver albedo-enhancing materials such as reflective aerosols and saltwater sprays. This session also covers system-level assessments of SRM technologies that consider technical feasibility and cost.  


Session 3: Atmospheric chemistry

Chair - Dr Matt Watson, University of Bristol

Injecting materials into the stratosphere or troposphere will result in changes to the composition and chemistry of the atmosphere and clouds. This session will examine what we know about these changes through observations of natural phenomena (such as volcanic eruptions and cloud formation), lab measurements and computer modelling. 


Session 4: Impacts, implications and consequences

Chair - Dr Naomi Vaughan, University of East Anglia

Changing the earth's energy balance by SRM will affect the earth's ecosystem. This session will examine the second-order effects of SRM on the Earth’s system including the hydrological cycle, carbon cycle and ecosystems.
